How American Retirees Use Social Security While Living in Chile
US Social Security retirement benefits can continue in Chile. Many retirees keep deposits in a US account and transfer only what they need for local expenses.

Will your Social Security stop when you move to Chile? No. In practice, many retirees keep their payments in a US account and transfer only what they need to Chile.
Benefits can continue in Chile
The Social Security Administration’s payment rules for beneficiaries outside the United States put Chile on the list of countries where US citizens may continue to receive benefits while living abroad, assuming they remain otherwise eligible.
This applies to Title II retirement, survivor, and disability benefits under SSA’s international payment rules. It does not apply to SSI. SSI has strict US-presence rules and generally stops after you have been outside the United States for about a month.
Before you leave, SSA expects an address update even if deposits already go to a bank. Read SSA’s instructions for beneficiaries leaving the US and the booklet on payments while outside the United States rather than relying on forum memory.
Medicare generally does not cover medical services you receive in Chile. Benefit payments and health coverage are different systems. Do not conflate them when you budget.
A common setup: US account plus Chilean spending account
Many US retirees use the following setup:
- Social Security deposits to a US bank you already understand
- Keep long-term investments in your existing US brokerage unless a cross-border financial adviser recommends moving them
- Open a Chilean account after you have the identification documents your bank requires
- Transfer enough pesos each month to cover rent, utilities, medical care, and cash expenses
Why leave benefits in the US rather than forcing every peso through a Chilean deposit on payday?
- US institutions already know your fraud patterns and login recovery
- You avoid binding the entire benefit to one foreign bank relationship on week one
- You can time FX conversions instead of accepting a single bad day
- Large one-off needs (deposits, furniture, travel) can draw from the US side deliberately
A Chilean account still matters because landlords, utilities, and local transfers are easier to pay in pesos.
Transfers: ordinary monthly funding versus property money
For ordinary living costs, people compare:
- specialist FX/transfer services with explicit spreads and fees
- bank wire / SWIFT, often slower and dearer for small repeats
No method is always best. Compare how many pesos you receive after all fees, how long the transfer takes, what records you get, and what happens if it is frozen. Do not choose a service only because an advertisement promises an easy transfer.
A large property purchase requires different planning. You may need source-of-funds documents, answers for the bank, and careful timing around notary dates. Do not handle it as if it were simply a larger monthly transfer.
Build a currency buffer. USD/CLP moves. A rent that felt cheap on a strong-dollar month can tighten after a swing. Keep several weeks of local expenses already converted when you can.
Reports you may have to file
If your foreign financial accounts exceed USD 10,000 in total at any time during the year, you generally must file an FBAR. Chilean accounts count.
FATCA Form 8938 can also apply at higher thresholds depending on filing status and residence. Taxable Social Security on the US return still follows US rules. The US-Chile tax treaty has specific social-security allocation provisions that a cross-border tax preparer should apply to your facts rather than a headline summary.
A simple operating checklist
- Confirm with SSA that your benefit type continues in Chile and update your address before you go.
- Keep a US account open and healthy (and a backup card strategy).
- Open a Chilean account after you have the identification documents your bank requires.
- Schedule transfers so pesos arrive before your rent and other regular bills are due.
- Log FX rates and fees for the first six months so you see the real cost.
- Put FBAR and US tax dates on the same calendar as your Chilean deadlines.
